▎エッセンシャルオイル紹介
チェストツリーは地中海地域および西アジア原産で、現在では世界各地の亜熱帯地域で栽培されています。春または秋に播種して成長し、秋に果実を収穫します。高さは約3.5〜4メートルで、芳香性を持つ繁茂した落葉低木です。葉は紙質で羽状の葉縁を持ち、濃い淡紫色から赤紫色の円錐状の集散花序を形成し、果実は倒卵形の核果です。
学名のagnusおよびcastusは「純潔・貞潔」を意味し、別名はセイクリッドベリー、またはモンクペッパーとも呼ばれます。名称にペッパーとありますが、胡椒の風味は一切ありません。精油およびハイドロゾルはハーブ調の香りに加え、わずかに樟脳に似た清涼感のある苦味と辛味を帯びています。伝統的なハーブとして少なくとも2000年以上の歴史があり、古くから婦人科系のケアに用いられてきました。クマツヅラ科に属し、一般的なバーベナやレモンバーベナとは遠縁です。ギリシャでは、夫が戦地に赴いている間、女性が貞節を示すためにチェストツリーの果実を食べたり、その葉を敷いたベッドで眠ったりしていたとされています。

成分にはβ-カリオフィレン、β-ファルネセン、α-ピネン、サビネン、テルピネオール、1,8-シネオールなどが含まれ、産地によって成分比率は異なります。
